System Architecture

The Space Sector of HISDESAT satellite government communication system is composed of two satellites: SPAINSAT, that will be located in a geostationary orbit at 30º West longitude and XTAR-EUR, which is located at 29º East orbital position.

Between both satellites, HISDESAT offers a total of 25, 72 MHz X Band transponders (between 7,90 GHz and 8,40 GHz in the uplink, and between 7,25 GHz and 7,75 GHz in the downlink) and transponders in Ka Band.

In this way, HISDESAT is able to offer its customers the possibility to contract a wide range of dedicated X Band communication services, that include the option to operate with transponders in a total or partial way. Its steerable and fixed coverage allow its use in several places, depending on the real-time requirements of the user.

Together, both satellites provide coverage over a very wide geographical surface, including America, The Atlantic Ocean, the East and West of Europe, Africa and the Near and Middle East.

Each satellite, along with its payload, is controlled and operated from its corresponding Ground Control System.

SPAINSAT has two Ground Control Centres, one of them a back-up, that act as tracking and monitoring centres. These centres are situated in Arganda (Madrid) and and in Maspalomas (Canary Islands). Both centres contain Transmission, Reception and Ranging (TT&C) Antennas with geographical separation.

XTAR-EUR has another two Ground Control Centres, one of them a back up, situated in Otawa (Canada) and Mt Jackson (Virginia). The Tracking Centres, due to the satellite orbital position, are located in Spain (Arganda and Maspalomas) with their respective TT&C Antennas. The combination of these antennas along with the SPAINSAT TT&C Antennas creates a third level of back up, by sharing resources if necessary.
