THE SATELLITE
COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM
Hisdesat’s range of satellite communication systems has made the consolida-
tion of the company as one of the principal international suppliers of secure
communication services by satellite on the military K- and Ka-bands for govern-
mental applications a reality. This system is designed to provide communication
services for both civilian and military applications of a governmental nature. It
consists of the following components:
— SpainSat. Positioned at 30º West, its coverage area includes practically the
entire American continent, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
— Xtar-Eur: Positioned at 29º East, it coverage area is from Brazil to Indonesia,
including Europe, Africa, the Middle East and much of Asia.
The platforms for SpainSat and Xtar-Eur, the two satellites in the Hisdesat system,
are based on the Space Systems/Loral LS-1300
model with 3-axis stabilization, the effectiveness

and reliability of which has been demonstrated
satellites built by SS/L have accumulated over
1,100 years of service.
Both satellites have been designed for a 15-year
service life. The on-board antennae have been
configured in such a way that they provide a com-
bination of beams, both fixed and adjustable, in or-
der to maximize the flexibility of the system. The
adjustable beams have no restrictions in terms of
where they point within the area of coverage of
each satellite and may be trained upon a specific
area at any time. In addition, various transponders
can be used with the same beam.
Each satellite is capable of providing 1,000 MHz
of dual-polarized broadband, both to the right
and left, thereby optimizing the use of the spec-
trum available.
