SPAINSAT NG PROGRAM

The SPAINSAT NG I and II satellites will be located at positions 30ºW and 29ºE

Coverage

An extensive world area that ranges from the United States and South America, to the Middle East, including Africa and Europe and reaching Singapore on the Asian continent.

Bands: X, Ka Mil and UHF.

Mission:

  • Ensure effective command and control in operations of the Armed Forces beyond the line of sight in 2/3 of the Earth.
  • Guarantee communication capacity in theaters of operations lacking infrastructure.
  • Develop more satellite communications in motion, greater capacity and security.
  • Unlocking the potential of the battlespace-netcentric warfare and operations core network.

They incorporate advanced protection technologies against interference attempts (anti-jamming) and spoofing (anti-spoofing), and will be reinforced and protected against nuclear phenomena at high altitude.

Operational useful life of 15 years remaining in service until 2037.

Contractors

More than 40% of the satellites will be developed by the national industry, led by a consortium of four co-contractors (the French and Spanish subsidiaries of the European companies Airbus D&S and Thales Alenia Space), with Airbus DS Spain being the main and integrating contractor. of the X-band payload and TAS Spain, the main contractor and integrator of the military Ka-band payloads and UHF, with Airbus DS Toulouse acting as the leader of the consortium.

In the development of new applications and services provided on the new satellites, the most innovative technologies of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Internet of things, etc. are applied.

Eurostar Neo

The satellites will be based on this Airbus platform, which has greater capacity and flexibility, making possible the electronic reorientation of the beams according to the needs:

  • A fully flexible X-band payload using active antennas with in-orbit reconfiguration capability.
  • An on-board digital processor that will interconnect military X and Ka-band payloads to allow band crossover.
  • A dedicated high-speed service link that will facilitate rapid reconfiguration.

The SARA antennas in X-band reception and transmission in X-band developed by Airbus DS in Madrid, are representing a qualitative leap in industrial capacities in Spain, which will allow us to compete in very good conditions in the market for the most advanced communications satellites of the world. It is also very important to highlight the number of highly qualified employment that this program is generating in Spain, amounting to more than 500 engineers a year during the development phase and more than 100 engineers a year during its exploitation phase, for 15 years.

GOVSATCOM

They offer capacities to other Spanish government entities, allies and friendly countries with bilateral agreements, framed in this EU government communications program.

NATO requirements

It meets the NATO requirements for the Alliance’s communications in its missions and deployments, allowing Spain to be positioned among the most advanced countries in the alliance, contributors of critical operational capabilities.

Cooperation

Support for Spanish Ministry of Defense, and funding from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain, the Spanish Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) within the framework of a public-private collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Hisdesat , called Pacis 3. ESA’s partnership project supports the development and integration of innovative satellite payload elements, such as the reconfigurable X-band transmit and receive active antennas and the drop-down paddle with individually steerable Ka-band antennas.

Milestones

The most important milestone to be fulfilled in 2021 will be the successful completion of the Critical Design Review of the complete satellite (CDR), which will lead to the manufacture of all the flight elements of the satellites. However, flight equipment is already being manufactured, especially for the all-electric Eurostar NEO satellite platform. The technical teams of our co-contractors, Airbus DS Spain and France and TAS Spain and France, together with the rest of the subcontractors are doing an outstanding job, as are Hisdesat, acting as a client. Likewise, ESA and CDTI participate in an important way in the Pacis 3 program, Public Private Collaboration between ESA and Hisdesat to develop the most innovative elements of the satellite, especially the X-band payload, with the most advanced active antennas in Europe, and the panel and the antennas and mechanisms in military Ka band.
